"The book was extensively developed and represents the most comprehensive text on the market. It has 16 chapters, rich pedagogy. It reviewed positively and is clearly a well-developed textbook. Its position in the market will need to be rebuilt from the ground up but I see potential for this to be our leading communication book on the list. We have previously had good success in this subject area on the learning matters imprint with Bach & Grant. Communication remains a core subject within the nursing degree and has been given increased prominence within the new NMC standards. It forms the basis of one of two 'skills annexes' which students need to develop competence in before they can qualify. Teaching approaches vary but it is common to find a dedicated communication skills module in first year of study and for it to then be integrated and further developed in the remainder of the programme. Feature 1: The book puts communication theory into its full nursing context talking about the barriers and challenges they will face along with practical examples of how skilled communication can improve health outcomes. Feature 2: The book emphasises the importance of understanding the needs of each patient individually and explains to students how these needs may differ across groups and communities using the person-centred framework as a tool for doing this. Emotional intelligence will be a new theme integrated into the book and there will be a new, modern chapter on person-centred care and intercultural communication (chapter 6). The reviewers also asked for more on modern forms of communication like social media and technology and protocols which the author is happy to bring in"-- Provided by publisher.
